The Prison Door by lastlabyrinth The Prison Door by lastlabyrinth
"Fearing his daughter's power, the corrupt mage-king Aktaed condemned her to die in a mountain tomb on the shores of a far-flung isle. The gentle princess accepted her fate without fear, asking only for a last glimpse at the stars.

"As she relinquished her mortality, her soul became a holy prism, a medium through which pure and auspicious magic was refracted and spread across an ailing land; and her prison became her palace.

"Thus did Saktina become the loving guardian of Vosteghem."

--a Yulin folktale

(I may have mentioned before that the Yulin have some different ideas about Saktina; this image represents one of them. Maybe there's a bit of truth to it, as well, though.)

My favorite complimentary colors! This has a beautiful, ethereal storybook feel to it. I can't help but think of Tolkien.

Ack, I have nothing to add that hasn't been said already. But I love your work! :)

I adore the color harmony in this picture. It really stands out because of it. Lovely work. I might have to try something like this in the future.

Thank you so much! And please do. I have great difficulty with working enough contrast into my paintings. This piece started with the same idea of blue and orange, but the contrast was much, much lower, and in fact if the image was grayscaled it was difficult to tell one part of the image from another. I feel that I learned something valuable by pushing the contrast of this image much further than I had intended (or was comfortable with).

He's an ominous figure, and the source of some schisms in the Yulin church-- if there was an earthly king before Saktina's ascension, for instance, how could she have created men? If he went on being king, how is it that no other historians have recorded his existence? And so on.

I'm glad you liked it, though I need to illustrate some other figures from my world than just Saktina and her nemesis... I tend to fall back on them when I have few ideas, and obviously I have not had many ideas lately! Haha.

I always forget or forget to ask, what's the symbolism behind the red ribbons 'round her wrists? Aside from me doodling her and going: "HAHA, CHEAP MOVEMENT TRICK TO THE RESCUUUE."

Originally, they represented her bondage. When the imagery made its way to Yula, however, it turned into a Yulin cultural thing with a different meaning. Ribbons (especially red ribbons, and always tied in a simple knot, never a bow) became symbols of eternity-- eternity in the sense of cycles of life and death and rebirth and so on-- solely because they were associated with Saktina. For instance, you don't put red ribbons on gifts in Yula; you put them on grave markers and tie them around coffins. It's essentially a way to say, "Safe travel," and wish someone the benefit of Saktina's watchful eye, for a journey that never ends.

This is also tangentially related to why sashes are such indispensable articles of clothing in Yula (and elsewhere on the continent). It's a really old folk belief that certain kinds of fabric tied around one's person protect one from bad stuff. Some countries (like Matima) claim it has to be braided or twisted (as with cords or rope) for it to "work". Others don't really care and just have the regular sashes.
