Done in openCanvas and Photoshop. PS was used primarily for adding base colors to the original picture (done in monochrome) and using layers to experiment with color, while oC was used for all of the sketching, shading, and final touches. Bascially, the process was a test of various things I hadn't done before.
The lack of a background is intentional, and, for once, is not due to laziness or time constraints. It should suffice to say that I felt a background with any amount of detail would damage the purity and simplicity of the image. The goal was a contemplative and tranquil atmosphere-- not realism-- and, bearing that in mind, I chose to leave the background out.
The title refers to how a flower is picked and subsequently dies in order to temporarily satisfy a person's happiness.
This was made as a birthday gift for my wonderful aunt, but I hope that you'll all enjoy it. I feel like I'm slowly becoming a better artist, and I owe most of that to this website and to its supportive and knowledgable users.
Beautiful, i love your use of soft colours, it really sets off the innocence of the girl. The shading and toning is absolutely brilliant!
The meaning in this is great, I never thought of flowers like that before... i will definately think twice before picking any now ^^
That's wonderful! She's delicate without being flimsy. And the shadow of her hand was done perfectly! A detail many would have left out. The lighting in this is so good. Really feels sunlit and warm.

I absolutely love the smoothness of this picture. It's partly the colouring and shading, but partly something else . . . it just seems so smooth and flowing and . . . delicate. The only thing I could see is that although her hand very good, and very interesting, I think her ring finger is too straight, since the rest of her hand is relaxed. Other than that, this is absolutely gorgeous. ^_^ Awesome job.
-- You etched your name into my heart, but you wrote in fading ink . . .
Thank you very much!
Well, the imagery of a flower wasn't exactly literal in this case. My aunt's a mother, so she has naturally had to give up many things for the happiness of her children.
Even if one leaves a flower as it grows, it's only going to stay there until it dies, or until it gets pollinated and then dies; some of them, however, get picked, bring someone a bit of happiness, and then die. Which is the better life? I guess I was trying to apply that question to people rather than flowers.
Thanks for commenting! And yeah, you're right about the finger-- I didn't notice it until I woke up this morning, read your comment, and looked at it again. I'll fix it sooner or later. I'm being lazy right now. xD

Also, LOL at your signature, which I just noticed.
